Queen Victoria was the only child of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. She was born on May 24, 1819 at Kensington Palace in London and she became heir to the throne when her father died. In 1837, she became Queen at the age of 18. Born at Tioga Point (Athens), Pa.; grew up in Newtown Point (Elmira), N.Y. Veteran of the War of 1812; served in U.S. House of Representatives from 1829-1831. Later became an attorney; moved to Geneva, N.Y. upon his appointment as deputy clerk of the state supreme court. Father of Harriet Maxwell Converse, author and American Indian advocate.
